Inaugural PLANADVISER Vision Awards 2022

As they celebrated our 15th anniversary in print, the editorial team at PLANADVISER Magazine took a minute to reflect on the remarkable changes that have transpired in the retirement plan services industry over the last several decades. During this period of contemplation, several insights arose, including a renewed appreciation for the work of the significant individual leaders and changemakers. They have shaped the retirement plan industry of 2022. They hope to honor industry leaders who have pushed for good change and contributed to better retirement outcomes for the American workforce with the Vision Awards. Bradford Campbell, a partner at Faegre Drinker and former head of the Employee Benefits Security Administration, is the first recipient of the Vision Awards. WIPN – WE Inspire. Promote. Network. WIPN began as the Women in Pensions Network in 2009 and has now grown into a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization with a network of over 5,500 retirement industry professionals organized in local chapters around the United States. WIPN’s members are united in increasing the presence of women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups in the financial industry in the United States, and their efforts are bearing fruit. WIPN has featured women at all career levels – from entry to senior management – representing the different components of the retirement industry, including recordkeepers, TPAs, DCIOs, broker/dealers, RIAs, and ERISA attorneys, asset managers, and advisers – since its founding. The group changed its name in 2021 to WIPN – WE Inspire. Promote. Network. WIPN redoubled its commitment to promoting networking opportunities, the establishment of mentorship, and the pursuit of justice in the retirement industry’s hiring and promotion policies as a result of the move. WIPN’s founders said the decision was based on the vision and knowledge that genuine representation and equality in the retirement plan services business can only be achieved by a collective effort involving everyone working in the field today, regardless of their identification. WIPN’s past, present, and future work highlights the outsized impact that innovative professionals can have on the retirement plan business, but they will be the first to admit that the task is far from done. Bradford Campbell Former Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employee Benefits and head of the Employee Benefits Security Administration. Defining contribution plans as an additional retirement benefit has become one of the fundamental pillars of the U.S. retirement plan system since the Pension Protection Act of 2006. Brad Campbell was a key architect of the Pension Protection Act and other significant ERISA retirement and health reforms. His regulatory and policy judgments shaped the structure and operation of ERISA plans. He drafted and issued the final regulations defining the qualified default investment option and enrollment safe harbor framework, which continues to promote automatic enrolment and the use of pre-diversified investments in defined contribution plans.
